PUP Goes Green: A Guide to the New Plastic-Free Campus Policy

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) is taking a major step towards environmental sustainability with the implementation of its new policy on single-use plastics (SUPs). Effective August 1, 2025, PUP is launching the second phase of its “zero-plastic waste” initiative.

What You Need to Know

  • When: The use, sale, and distribution of single-use plastics are now prohibited every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
  • Who: This policy applies to everyone on campus – students, employees, visitors, and food concessionaires. The only exemptions are for individuals with medical needs or disabilities.
  • What’s Banned: The ban includes common items like plastic bottles, plastic bags, straws, cups, and food packaging made of Styrofoam.

What You Can Do

To help the university achieve its goal, everyone is encouraged to use sustainable alternatives. For instance, you can bring a reusable water bottle or a food container for your meals. Concessionaires are being encouraged to switch to paper-based alternatives and may even offer discounts if you bring your own container.

Why It Matters

This initiative is a crucial step in combating plastic pollution, which has become a global issue. It also aligns with the university’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and its own programs for social and environmental development.

By working together, we can make our campus cleaner and greener, demonstrating our commitment to protecting the planet. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
